FAQs

  • We offer different types of membership depending on whether you are: a local resident or ratepayer; attend an educational institution in the district; are a non-resident or visitor.

  • It is free to join the library if you are a Marlborough District resident or ratepayer. We offer a visitor membership, fees apply.

    • Visit the library with photo ID (for example your passport or driver’s licence).
    • Speak to a friendly member of staff and they will sign you up.
    • You will be given a library card that you can use at both of the Marlborough District Libraries.
    • Start borrowing from our collections and using our online resources.

  • Yes. Marlborough District Libraries’ members can borrow from, and return items to either libraries.

    • A maximum of 30 items can be borrowed per card.
    • Visitor members can borrow a maximum of four items.
    • A maximum of nine eBooks/eAudiobooks can be borrowed.
  • Most items at Marlborough District Libraries are free to borrow.

    However there are charges on some adult fiction books and DVDs. Items that cost money to borrow are clearly labelled. If you are not sure please ask the staff.

  • You can pay your library charges at your library (Blenheim or Picton) by cash or Eftpos.

    You can also pay online using these details:

    1. Bank: BNZ

    2. Account Name: Marlborough District Council

    3. Bank Account Number: 02-0600-0202861-000

    Please enter the following information so we can identify your payment:

    1. Reference: Your Library Card number/ User ID (on the back of your Library Card)

    2. Code: use the word ‘Library’

    3. Include your name

  • Yes. Please bring your library card with you when you visit the library. You will need it to use our self-checkout machines. If you don’t have your card we will ask for your ID. We recommend you do not share your library card. You are responsible for all items borrowed, and any fees incurred.

  • Please let us know as soon as possible if your card has been lost or stolen.

    When your card is replaced, your account details remain the same and any items you have already borrowed will still show on your library account.

    You can purchase a new card for $2.00.

  • You can return items to either library through our after-hours' returns facility.

  • Overdue charges apply to items borrowed from the adult collection if they are returned after the due date. The charge is 30c per item, per day. The maximum is $8 per item (plus processing fee).

    There are no overdue charges on items borrowed from the children’s and teen’s collections.

    If items are lost, or returned damaged then we may ask you to pay the replacement cost.

    • Four weeks (28 days) is the standard loan period for books, talking books, puzzles, magazines and sheet music.
    • Books with multiple holds may have a shortened loan period.
    • One week (seven days) is the standard loan period for DVDs. Some multi disc sets have a longer loan period.
  • Items can be renewed once without visiting the library.

  • Items cannot be renewed if there is a hold on the item, if your membership needs to be renewed or if you have more than $20.00 owing.

    If your library membership needs to be renewed please contact the library to update your membership.

    If you have more than $20.00 owing on your account, visit your local library to pay outstanding fees and charges.

    If you renew an item that has a rental fee you will be charged that fee again. If you renewed the item online these charges are added to your account.

  • Yes, both libraries have accessible public toilets and baby-changing facilities.

  • Yes, both libraries are open at weekends.

  • Yes, free WiFi is available and is provided by the Department of Internal Affairs via the Aotearoa People’s Network Kaharoa (APNK).

    You can use our computers or your own device to access the internet.

    We also offer faxing, scanning and printing facilities.
